Wellness Dog Food ... How to feed it.

Go to Index

From the moment the dog arrives to your house, teach it to eat alone in its bowl. If you feed the dog before people finish eating, you will teach the animal to obey the orders because it will learn that men are more dominant than dogs.
ADVICE 508
Don't leave food in places that are accessible for the dog or feed it from the table. If the dog present any problem with the food, it will be usually not difficult to solve.
STEALING Wellness Dog FOOD
Looking for food is instinctive on dogs and they don't necessarily do it because they are hungry.
Solution
1. If the dog is used to digging for food, provoke a situation that incites it to make an incursion in your presence. When the dog begins doing it, give it the order "leave it" firmly so the animal will understand that this activity is not allowed.
2. Close the wastebasket and then make the trash less attractive by sprinkling it with a non-toxic but bitter substance. Let the dog to dig in it. For this method to be successful, the bitter flavor of the wastebasket should be bigger than the reward of its incursion.
BEGGING for food
The dogs that approach the table asking for food can be a real disturbance.
ADVICE 509
Giving the dog some food every now and then is even worst than doing it every time you have a meal. The constant customs are easier to change than the ones that occur every now and then.
Solution
1. Show the dog to eat only when it is allowed. Order it to sit while you prepare its food away from the table.
2. Put the food on the floor, but keep the dog sit until you release it with the order "eat", "good", "ok".
REJECTING Dog FOOD
Some dogs deny eating the food they are offered. This usually happen with the toy breeds, but also with big and thin breeds. Dog can resist more time without eating than people.
Solution
ADVICE 510
A healthy dog never starves with food in front on it. With the permission of your veterinary, leave the food for the dog during 10 minutes and take it out after this time.
ADVICE 511
Repeat this everyday will minor quantities until the dog eats it all.
REPUGNANT CUSTOMS
EATING EXCREMENT (COPROPHAGY)
This is a repugnant custom, but the animal excrements can be really nutritive for dogs.
ADVICE 512
Gleaning on the excrement of the herbivorous animals (horses, rabbits or deer) is natural for some dogs, specially the Labrador and the Golden Retriever.
ADVICE 513
In order to defeat this custom, use the normal training for obedience. If you see the dog looks interested in the excrement of an animal, give it the order "NO", if the dog pick it up with its mouth give it the order "let go".
THEIR OWN EXCREMENT
Eating their own or other dogs' excrements is a more dangerous act than the previous one. The dog can acquire intestinal parasites or create a bacteria proliferation in its intestines, with the result of chronic diarrhea.
ADVICE 514
Always pick up your dog's defecation, but in order to help defeating the problem, whenever you see a recent defecation (from other dog) pour it some spicy sauce.
