Calm Nervous / Scared Dog

Go to Index

The nervous or scared behavior is more common in small breeds and in the dogs that were isolated when they were young, but there are many other cases in which different causes have produced fear of noises, such as false explosions of the engine of a car or fireworks. This can happen even in gunshot canine breeds.
ADVICE 461
Some dogs get scared when they see the movement of objects they don't recognize such as scooters or baby carriages.
ADVICE 462
Other dogs get scared of people who walk on crutches or in wheelchairs and, even physical punishment to a dog can cause fear of hands, in the majority of cases the cause is another.
FEAR TO NOISES
Many dogs get scared and want to hide when they hear strong noises such as thunders.
ADVICE 463
The natural reaction of the master is to ease the dog and distract it from the cause of its fear, but this can increase the fearful answer of the dog, because it learns that when it shows its fear, the animal is rewarded with the contact of its master, encouraging words and even food.
Solution
ADVICE 464
Record the noises that scare dog. Play them for the dog to hear them when you know that this noise will not be produced. At first, play in with a low volume and reward the dog if it doesn't get scared.
ADVICE 465
During many weeks, increase the intensity of the noise until reaching the volume that scared the dog at the end.
FEAR TO OBJECTS
Dogs sometimes get scared in front of unknown objects, especially if they move. The dogs that live in families with no children often get scared of baby carriages and they run away when they see one, even if it doesn't move.
Solution
1. Put a delicious treat near the baby carriage. Try not to feed the dog before, so it will be willing to eat the treat. Gradually put the prize nearer to the baby carriage every time until the dog has to get the head inside of it to eat the treat.
2. Once you get the dog to eat pieces of food under the baby carriage, put its bowl of food gradually closer to the same position. During this training, move the baby carriage every now and then and reward the dog if it doesn't get scared.
FEAR OF HANDS - Dog Afraid of hands
Scared dogs have a conflict, they want to be fun for people but they are scared of people's hands, so the animals get away from people's hand for fear.
Solution
1. For the dog to get familiarized with hands, put your hand open with a food reward on the floor in front of the dog. If you fear the dog can bite you, follow the advise for the bites.
2. As soon as the dog takes the food from your hand always and for its own initiative, reduce the distance between you and your dog, getting closer and closer every time until you get next to it.
THE SUBMISSION URINE
A dog that is too scary can roll on the floor submissively and even urinate when you give it an order or when it is in situations that scared it too much.
ADVICE 466
If the dog behaves like this during its training, it means you are being too tough with it. Of course, you shouldn't caress it or touch it because that would intimidate it even more.
Solution
ADVICE 467
In order to get the dog's trust back, you should get down to its level and courage it to raise with one of its favorite toys. Playing to bring objects will help the dog to forget its submissive posture without having to touch it, which would make it even more submissive.
ADVICE 468
If the dog rolls on the floor and urinates when you celebrate it, don't pay attention to the animal until it gets calmed.
