Distrustful dogs, specially the ones that were picked up from the dog shelters are more likely to bark, dig and destroy when they are left alone.
|
ADVICE 488
These insecure animals need to be kindly treated, since the side effects of their anxiety require time to heal.
ADVICE 489
Increase the separation periods during several weeks, leaving the dog alone with a toy you have previously rubbed with your hands. Punish the dog when it is misbehaving, never later. If you don't do it in the adequate moment, you will confuse the dog.
How to stop a dog from jumping on you?
Puppies welcome their mother by jumping in order to lick its face. Sometimes dogs, specially the adolescents, around six and eighteen months of age, try to do the same with people when they are excited. |
ADVICE 490
Don't encourage the natural inclination of the dog to jump by slapping on its tights and raising your voice when you arrive home.
ADVICE 491
Tell the children not to make exaggerated gestures with their hands. If you act calmly, it is probable that the dog will do it too.
THE EXCITEMENT JUMPS
Dogs jump more often when they are excited. The arrival to the house, getting the leash when a visitor comes alone, all that can stimulate them to jump.
ADVICE 492
| The dogs with lack of stimulus can also do it even when this is proper of the young dogs, avoid this by making your dog exercise a lot.
|
Solution
1. You should begin correcting the dog's tendency to jump by reinforcing its obedience to the orders "sit" and "quiet". Instead of using a negative order as "get out", get into the room and order it to sit. Don't raise your voice or move the arms in a violent way because both things stimulate the animal.
2. Reward the dog when it sits down when you order so, but don't caress its head, because the dog can try to lick your face. Instead of this, get down up to its level, caress it energetically on the sides or under the chin and congratulate it for being quiet. Practice this exercise until the dog stops jumping.
CANINE BULLET
While some dogs limit themselves to jump in order to lick their masters' faces, other throw themselves in the air towards people. This is normal among dogs but is dangerous for people.
Solutions
ADVICE 493
You should avoid the flashy reception and go next to the dog trying not to look at it. When the paws of the dog are back on the floor, order it to sit and get down to its level, reward it for its obedience.
IF THE DOG JUMPS ON VISITORS
1. If the dog persists on jumping on the visitors when they arrive put the leash on the dog before opening the door and order it to sit.
2. Ask a friend to bring a food reward for the dog when they get home. The dog should receive the prize from the visitor if it sits obediently when the visitors arrive.
GREETING CHILDREN
Some dogs jump more over the children than the adults because their faces are practically at their level and apparently, that excites them more.

|
ADVICE 494
Introduce the dog to the children having it controlled and on the leash. Tell the child not to be nervous or raise their hands to its face, but to keep them on the side of their body. Reward the dog if it doesn't jump and repeat the exercise.
BEGGING FOR ATTENTION
Some dogs, especially from small breeds, jump, bark, groan or lick to call attention or ask for food. This is bad custom of the dog and you shouldn't allow it.
ADVICE 495
Never give the dog food from the table or pay attention to it when it demands it. If you pay attention to the dog, it will know that it will profit with its behavior.
ADVICE 496
Reduce its dependence to you by making other members of the family or even friends feed it.
VIGOROUS CONTROL
Always use positive methods to control the dog's behavior. When the dog jumps, you should never hit the dog on the chest with your knees, kick its rear paws or press the front ones.
ADVICE 497
You should control the dog's behavior with common sense. Be firm but not cruel.
