Outdoor exercises are very gratifying when your dog walks conveniently next to you.
Teaching a dog how to walk on a leash. |
| ADVICE 253 |
| It is almost always easy to teach a puppy to walk off the leash because it will be willing to go with you happily. Most of the puppies will also follow the smell of the traits, so it is convenient to have them at hand and even show them to the dogs to motivate them. |
| With the puppy at your left side, grab it by the collar with the hand of the same side while you show it a treat with the right hand. Attract its attention by calling it by its name. |
| While you walk in a straight line with the puppy following its prize, give the dog the "next to me" order. Keep your left hand low, ready to grab the puppy's collar. |
| Order it, "wait" and get on your knees at the right side of the puppy, holding the treat low so the puppy won't jump. Place your left hand with the palm facing down, lower the puppy's body; this will keep it from moving. |
| Bending your knees and keeping the food near the puppy's snout, turn right while you repeat the order "next to me". The puppy should quickly turn around you. |
| When turning left, guide the dog holding the collar with your left hand while you give it the order "go on".
Keep the food low in your right hand, moving it to the left. The puppy should follow it.
